Transition Wilmslow aims to build a sustainable town by working with people across our whole community (i.e. Wilmslow, Handforth and the surrounding areas) to look after our natural environment, address climate change and share skills and knowledge.  We address this through education and initiatives on repair and recycling, food, transport, buildings and landscapes in our local area.

We have developed three community market gardens across Wilmslow and Handforth where people are joining together in skill-sharing to grow food sustainably.

Lindow Moss is an area of peat bog on the western edges of Wilmslow which for centuries had been cut for peat and is at last on the verge of restoration by its owners.  It is designated as an area of historic and cultural importance and our volunteers have organised expert-guided walks and plant hunts for the public over a number of years.

Our tree and woodlands group has facilitated planting across Wilmslow and Handforth, working with Ansa (providers of green space management for Cheshire East Council), to design schemes and planting trees and hedges in public parks, open spaces, sports clubs, schools, community gardens and streets.

Responding to relevant planning applications across Wilmslow and Handforth, and relevant local and national consultations, we raise awareness amongst planners and others of the importance of maintaining high standards of climate change adaptation and mitigation, and the promotion of biodiversity in line with the town’s Neighbourhood Plan.

Our transport group promotes active travel (particularly walking and cycling) in Wilmslow and Handforth.  This is essential to reducing climate change by reducing fossil fuel use as well as reductions in pollution and having an impact on the health of the population, cleaner air and better enjoyment of the natural environment.

Our energy group provides advice to businesses and homes across Wilmslow and Handforth on ways of retrofitting buildings and reducing fossil fuel use, but also cutting bills for householders and businesses at a time of rocketing costs.

We hold a repair café three times a year and repairs are undertaken by volunteers who are experts in bike, furniture, electrical, textile and jewellery repairs and who advise, and attempt to repair, for no charge.  People bringing repairs are encouraged to watch the repairer in action and learn new skills.

Our Festival of Nature has been a month-long series of events for people of all ages to learn and have fun, without using fossil fuels.  The festival has included talks, expert-guided walks, bike rides, planting events, Community Market Garden events, and this year and last, a free bike powered concert demonstrating how electrical power can be generated and power the loudspeakers.  This included road closures to allow children to play on the streets, and some thousands of people attended.

We meet once a month for updates on our local groups and often have informal talks and discussions at the meeting.  Everyone is welcome.
