Transition Broome: Collaborating to Care for Our Common Home
We are a network of Broome groups, organisations, schools, universities and individuals helping each other to care for our place and each other. We aim to increase our social handprint (work together) to reduce our ecological footprint (reduce our impact on our place and planet). The central question is: “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” (Pope Francis, 2015). Below are the initial four pillars, to be reviewed as a common vision is formed. • An acknowledgement that this project is located on Yawuru Country. Yawuru cultural knowledges, traditions, languages and caring for Country wisdom – and revitalisation – are the central backbone of the project. • Ecological conversion: from a business-as-usual consumerist lifestyle towards one of simplicity and care for Earth and each other. • Community-of-practice methodology. Learning and transformation will be planned and networked for all levels of the Broome community: individuals, small groups, organisations, institutions, businesses, small communities and the whole community, within an overall community development design. • For all people of all faiths or no faith, all backgrounds and persuasions, all ages and interests.
