Portishead

Last Updated: 141 days ago

Transition Portishead was started in March 2009 by three of the steering group. After a number of initial changes the steering group is now seven strong and we have active schools, food, and energy groups. Portishead is a fast growing town with a current population of around 20,000.

Our major achievements include:

  • delivering a Transition Workshop regularly to five of the six primary schools in our town
  • organising a number of seed and food swaps
  • established a community nuttery on open space owned by North Somerset Council
  • organised successful community apple harvest in October 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2013 and 2014 we organised 4 community pressing events to complement the apple harvest.
  • In 2014 we have worked with Portishead in Bloom to develop a town garden including 6 raised beds for vegetables.
  • organised energy days in September 2010 and April 2012 with 250 people attending
  • Low Carbon Gordano energy cooperative established in 2011 in conjunction with Sustainable Pill and District. In 2014 expanded area of activity to include Clevedon, Nailsea, Backwell, and Long Ashton. In June 2014 launched first community share issue for a 1.8MW, £2.2M solar array near Avonmouth in Bristol. The share issue was fully subscribed and the solar array has been constructed and is now fully operational. The mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson, officially launched the array, Bristol’s first large scale community energy scheme, on 9th may 2015. LCG is now about to launch a second share offer for their next project, a 900kW solar array south of Clevedon in North Somerset.
