Pacha Mama Alliance Kenya, a grassroots community-based organization (CBO) rooted in a profound commitment to environmental stewardship, harmony and sustainable development in Oyugis. Established and founded in 2017 with the target to empower communities to preserve their lands and cultures while inspiring a “new dream” for humanity.

In Kenya, this translates to fostering collaborative efforts between local residents, environmental experts, and youth to protect natural resources, combat climate change, and enhance community well-being. Operating primarily from Oyugis in Homa Bay County—about 207 miles west of Nairobi—the CBO bridges global Indigenous wisdom with African realities, emphasizing that human activities are the primary drivers of ecological degradation and that collective action is key to reversal.

At its core, Pacha Mama Alliance Kenya’s mission is to create a harmonious balance between human activity and environmental preservation through education, conservation, and community-driven initiatives.

Led by a group of volunteers with passion for turning awareness into action, stating, “Human activities are the major contributors to climate changes globally. In Pacha Mama Alliance Kenya, we deeply felt that together we all can play the role of game changers in making our planet better for future generations.”

Under my guidance since around 2017, the Organization has hosted transformative programs like training workshops for youths and community groups, planting trees over 150,000 in schools, public lands and churches, established over 40 trees and fruits seedbeds and nurseries to 42 groups, over 500 household have benefitted and reaching over 700 participants—primarily youth and families—to instill ecological literacy and personal responsibility.

These sessions blend storytelling, science, and practical skills, encouraging attendees to view themselves as stewards of the land rather than exploiters. The organization’s flagship projects center on hands-on conservation, with tree planting as a cornerstone.

Beyond reforestation, the CBO promotes permaculture and regenerative agriculture, establishing demonstration farms that teach drought-resistant farming, waste management, and sustainable food systems.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it pivoted to relief efforts, distributing food kits, prevention supplies, and tree seedlings to vulnerable families, while integrating environmental education into school curricula via partnerships like ENO Kenya.

Pacha Mama Alliance Kenya’s approach is deeply collaborative, aligning with the global ethos of “skillful alliances” where credit is secondary to impact.

It partners with schools, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and international bodies like the Global Compassion Coalition to amplify reach.

Funding comes from well-wishers, self-fundraising,donations and grands(only if fund application got approved). Challenges persist—such as limited resources and climate unpredictability—but successes like reduced schoolyard erosion and heightened youth activism demonstrate resilience.

In essence, Pacha Mama Alliance Kenya is more than a conservation group; it’s a beacon of hope, weaving Indigenous-inspired wisdom into local action to heal the planet and its people. Through Micah Opondo’s visionary leadership, it proves that small seeds—literal and metaphorical—can root profound change, ensuring a greener, more just future for Homa Bay’s children and beyond. As Opondo reflects, these initiatives are “making our planet better,” one tree, one workshop, one empowered voice at a time.
