We aim to strengthen our community through connection, celebration and sustainability action.
We have a facilitators group of 8-10 people and then subgroups, with a convenor and members of those. Active volunteers (i.e. help at events, write submissions, host growers gatherings, have plots at community garden, etc) probably about 50.
We have over 430 members on our mailing list and our Facebook page is regularly updated, and has over 3100 members

We have established a community garden, created a large mural, hosted toys, clothes and gear swaps. We have organised large public events such as film nights, game nights, and Resilience Fairs featuring panellists on personal and community resilience, and skills workshops (clothing repair, pickling, bike maintenance).
We have made many submissions on issues such as climate change, active transport, urban planning, sustainability and natural resource management. We facilitated bulk purchases of PV systems, solar hot water, EVs, electric bikes and insulation and we have a food growers group that meets monthly, sharing excess seeds, seedling, produce, wisdom and afternoon tea.
We have held 2 community visioning sessions over the past five years, with about 100 people attending each and creating a vision for where we want to ago and taking the first practical steps towards getting there.
The South Hobart Sustainable Community is a group of residents who are keen to make South Hobart a more sustainable place.
Who are we?
South Hobart Sustainable Community (SHSC) creates change through acting locally. We
host events to build connections, and advocate for change at all levels of government. With
over 430 members, the SHSC is an active contributor to the South Hobart community, and
plays a leadership role in the greater Hobart area.
How will we achieve our aims?
Embrace appropriate technology to communicate, power our homes, live well and grow our food.
Treat South Hobart as an experimental model of sustainability.
Excite friends and family to roll up their sleeves and help out.
Reconnect with each other to strengthen South Hobart community spirit.
Learn from community groups with similar aims.

We acknowledge the Muwinina nation, traditional owners of Nipaluna land on which
South Hobart is built, and today’s Tasmanian Aboriginal people, the Palawa, who
continue to care for this beautiful country.
