Transition Newham, are acting as a Community Hub with over 30 associated groups on four levels:

  • Free Exchange network: All4Free, Food Hub, Services, Free events
  • Affiliated Groups: Right to Grow Newham, Newham Sharing initiative (East London Redistribution Network), SMP, Youth Empowered Spaces, Newham Mosiac, Cantina Community Kitchen, Friends Of Chandos Open Space, Plastic free Maryland/Olympic Park/Stratford, Community Gardening, Frugal & Vegan, The Woman’s Room, Freetail Unit, Newham Community Pet Food Pantry
  • Associated Groups: Forest Fixers, Respace Projects, Newham Community Pet Food Pantry, Furniture Reuse, Crossbow, Chandos Centre, Eco7, Threads, Mehboob & Co, Nadia’s Delight, Geek Cafe, Sphere Support, Bemin

We are aiming to be a mother hub to provide facilities and resources for our diverse community, a variety of enriching projects, mutual support and gatherings to create a sense of togetherness and to promote sustainable practice and environmental awareness in everyday life.

At the moment we have just under 400 members, with >2,000 members in associated groups.

 

Aims:

  • foster a strong sense of community and contribute to the holistic togetherness and healthy development of all members of our community. This initiative aims at creating a dedicated community hub that offers a diverse range of activities focussing on social interaction, education, creativity, physical and mental well-being, mutual aid
  • promote sustainable practice in everyday life, from redistributing tangible items (clothes, furniture, small electrical appliances and consumer elecronicals), reusing and repurposing of materials (fabric, wood, yarn) for sustainable crafts and upcyling projects, repairing items of daily use (textiles, toys, small electrical appliances and consumer elecronicals, furniture, jewellery), providing a balanced and holistic approach to environmental sustainability and community support.
  • using gardening to share first hand life science experience, understand permacultural principles of how to tend plant beds, grow vegetables, harvest rain water/ grey water, compost green and brown garden waste and use ecotherapy as a gentle approach to understand life and improve peoples wellbeing.
  • educate and encourage childred (of all ages) by listening to their feelings towards the changes in our natural environment, and empowering them with activities like sensory play sessions, sustainable craft, gardening, fixing things (Darning, Mending & Making Pretty Again), conducting research projects and themed weeks with hands on workshops (Great Green Week, Mental Health Week, Go Wild… ); based on Montessory principles, Outdoor Play and Forest school.

Fordele:

Miljøbevidsthed: Kulstofbevidsthed ("Small Footprint") tilbyder rådgivning om energibesparelser.

Bæredygtighed: Reduktion af affald og fremme af cirkulær økonomi (R-cycle), med Repair Cafes og bytte/deling af ressourcer. Introduktion til "grønt havearbejde" baseret på permakulturkonceptet.

Uddannelsesmæssig berigelse: Montessori-baserede SEND-inkluderende klasser, skovskoleaktiviteter, STEM-læring, leg, kunst og håndværk, historiefortælling. Klubber efter skoletid, Home Education Hub.

Intersociale, intergenerationelle og interable forbindelser giver fordele for alle: dybere forståelse og følelse af mening.

Kreativitet og udtryk: Klasser, kurser og klubber, der opmuntrer til at udforske kreative talenter og udtrykke dem frit.

Engagement i lokalsamfundet: Muligheder for at engagere sig i lokalsamfundet for at fremme en følelse af sammenhold og fælles ansvar for vores kvarters velbefindende og tilbyde støtte og rådgivning til lokalsamfundet.

Mutual Aid: Provide free and accessible resources for the community, including women’s sanitary products. Drop off hub for donations. SMP is running sustainable craft, gardening and permaculture workshops, the Newham Sharing initiative is organising quarterly All4Free events (supporting 300-600 people with each event, saving tonnes of tangible items from going to waste), working closely together with charities, baby banks and food bank across East London.

Solidaritet: Deling af ressourcer og omfordeling af mad og tilberedning af måltider i et suppekøkken til gratis uddeling til lokalsamfundet.

Security and Safety: Increased activity, support safety in the community and reduce likelihood of vandalism/antisocial behaviour.
